Skyscraper Page – a gold mine for skyscraper enthusiasts! This site contains architectural drawings for thousands of skyscrapers around the world. The drawings are provided by members of the SkyscraperPage Illustrators Association. Search criteria include height, construction year, location, structure type, and status.

Great Buildings – documents a thousand buildings and hundreds of leading architects with photographic images and architectural drawings, integrated maps and timelines, 3D building models, commentaries, bibliographies, web links, and more, for famous designers and structures of all kinds

World Wide Art Resources – features contemporary art, art news, history, and contemporary artist & gallery portfolios

Art & Architecture Thesaurus – contains more than 125,000 terms related to “fine art, architecture, decorative arts, archival materials, and material culture”. More than just a thesaurus, it contains definitions, historic & contemporary terms, and variants.

Artcyclopedia: the Fine Arts Search Engine – as of 2006 this site had “indexed 2,300 art sites, 95,000 links to 180,000 artworks by 8,200 renowned artists”.

AskART – what began as a site devoted to American artists now includes international artists. There are listings for over 155,000 artists from early 16th-century to the present day. Some portions are fee-based, but a huge amount of biographical and statistical data is available for free.

The NYPL Picture Collection Online – this site provides access to 30,000 digitized images from books, magazines, & newspapers, as well as, original photos, prints, & postcards all of which are part of the New York Public Library’s extensive collection. The site also links to a newer site which contains many of the same images, but offers slightly different search options.

Heilbrunn Timeline of Art History – supported by several foundations and featuring the art of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, this is a “chronological, geographical, and thematic exploration of the history of art around the world”.

Louvre Museum – explore the Louvre! The Louvre database of exhibits is available in English.




Critic’s Corner

Metacritic – compiles reviews from respected critics and publications for film, video/dvd, books, music, television, & games.

Rotten Tomatoes – organizes & collects reviews from a variety of sources (newspaper, online, magazines) and averages them into a single score. The site has over 7 million readers each month. With more than 250,000 titles and 850,000 review links in its ever-growing database, RT offers a fun and informative way to discover the critical reaction on movies neatly summarized via the Tomatometer.

Movie Review Query Engine – this is a searchable index of published and available movie reviews, as well as, the leading movie blogs. Also contains news, interviews, and user discussion forums.




General Entertainment & Media

Black Voices: African American and Black Culture Community - contains a wide variety of content & services. Good site to consult for people & current events in the black community.

The Big Cartoon Database – the definitive web compendium for those interested in the history of animation. Does not provide original cartoons for viewing or downloading, but does provide links.

The Internet Movie Database – contains over 2,250,000 filmographies covering some 180,000 movie titles & over 560,000 people. Search by: actor, director, writer, composer, cinematographer, editor, production designer, costume designer, or producer.

Internet Broadway Database – created by the Broadway League (a trade association). Contains historical information about shows produced on Broadway, as well as, theatres in general.

National Public Radio – producer and distributor of noncommercial news, talk, and entertainment programming.

The Official Academy Awards Database – contains the record of past Academy Award winners and nominees. The data is complete through the 2008 (81st) Academy Awards.

TV.com – in addition to covering today’s television, this site provides in depth coverage of more than 20,000 shows dating back to 1941, as well as the 450,000 cast and crew members who made it all happen.

World Anthem Database – a collection of national anthems from around the world

AllMusic – look up an out-of-print recording, check out reviews of new releases, or simply explore the world of music

Opera Glass – this site offers detailed information on many operas, including: libretti, source texts, synopses, performance histories, discographies, rôle creators, plus pictures, background information and much, much more.

Public Domain Music – this site has a listing of 3,500 songs that are in the public domain (published in 1922 or earlier). It offers information on sources for the music or lyrics for these songs.
